The CE (Conformité Européen = European Conformity) marking certifies that a product has met EU health, safety and environmental requirements to ensure customer safety.

Currently 32 countries require the CE marking. From 1st of July 2013 the Construction Products Regulation EU/305/2001 demands the CE marking for every construction product.

The marking has either to be based on harmonised standards or an European assessment document (European technical approval). To obtain the CE marking several steps have to be taken. The following points sum up some of the important demands.

The effort that goes into the CE marking makes a considerable difference compared to many products from the Far East or suppliers distributing products from the Far East, who do not have all conformity documentation and testing as listed above. Therefore some importers try to find solutions without fulfilling the above requirements. An example is the surprising similarity between the CE symbol and the symbol for ‘China Export’ (shown below).
